Future Vision
This exercise is to help you change your mindset, and keep you motivated as a company owner. By creating a future vision, you are creating something you can always return to, a mental image that will remotivate you and remind you what is possible. A future vision is a visualization strategy where you describe in absolute and precise detail what your perfect company looks like. You picture in crystal clear the culmination of every target you set and achieve, it is the massive shop with a truck bay, auto, shop, board room, cafeteria, training center, and dispatch floor. It is whatever your small shop could be if you grew and kept growing.
A part of the future vision is writing it down, so it is easier to remember, and always have. When you write it down it also makes it easier to share with those you have picked as your accountability partners. Remember an accountability partner is someone who checks in with you to see what step you are on for that target. Even owners need to be held accountable. The more people you tell something to, the closer it brings to becoming a reality. This is not wishful thinking, but purposeful thought that helps you achieve your goals. If you can’t imagine being successful, where it is risk-free and cost nothing to do, how will you ever actually achieve your massive targets if you cannot picture exactly what they are?
The future vision is your stone tablet, where you write down the exact marker of what it would look like if you were indeed successful in your targets.
What does your future vision hold? 100 trucks on the road, the largest shop in town, the most employees? Don’t let us limit your vision imagine something even greater than this and put pen to paper and write your vision down.
To help you create your own Future Vision let’s walk you through a kind of narrative exercise where you describe what your ideal company looks like. Think who, what where, when, and why when you craft your own future vision.
The vision I have for my company:
- The final form of my company will be a residential home services company that offers clients HVAC, Plumbing, Kitchen and Bathroom Renovations, and electrical services.
- Since I currently offer HVAC, I will open departments and roll out the services in this order: Plumbing, Renovations, and finally Electrical.
- To achieve this future vision, I will need to become the top company in my region known for honesty, quality workmanship, and offer the best warranties and guarantees. Furthermore, I will target wealthier homeowners who value quality service and while I will offer more affordable options, it is not my target client.
- A part of my future vision, is 50 wrapped vehicles in my fleet driving around the city advertising my company. The trucks are easy to spot in traffic, they are vivid orange with a white box along the side of them, and it reads, “A Trades Company” in big black letters.
- In this fleet of 50 vehicles they are organized by home services I’m offering and even the sales team has their own wrapped smaller sedans.
- I’ll need a site big enough site for my company, at the back of the building will be the shop and it will have a three-bay garage.
- The shop will also have warehouse space for stockpiled equipment, parts, and tools.
- In one corner of the shop is a workbench area for prefabricating equipment and parts for jobs and in another corner a place to scrap old equipment.
- Moving to the front offices, we have a boardroom, a lunchroom with a kitchenette, a reception desk, a dispatch room, a marketing & sales department and a few offices for senior staff. An open-concept officer for the workers to interact and help each other out.
- I see my company’s branded advertising on billboards, buses, and sponsoring city events.
- I know my vision will be achieved when my orange trucks are the talk of the town and my company is known as a reputable family ran business with over 100 staff.
