Practice and theory often stand at opposite side of a large gulf. This can be said about leading, theory needs to be applied for knowledge to be gained. Creating a good mental foundation to build your practical leadership on is a great place to start.

You need to try and lead your staff before you can call yourself a leader.

Let’s start you down the path and think about 13 ways to take on habits of a trustful leader.

  1. Speak the Truth

Leaders are honest since the core of a good leader is integrity. If you do not have this people will not follow you into battle. Dishonest leaders cannot expect to retain talented staff for long.

  1. Care For Those You Lead

Respect everyone you interact with, even in small dealings. Treat your staff like people not your laborers earning you profit.

  1. Be Transparent

Hide what makes you competitive but have an open book and open door when you can. If people can confirm you do not have an agenda, then you will gain authenticity.

  1. Right Wrongs

Cast pride aside and admit errors quickly. Make every effort to regain what was lost for all parties involved. Apologize and then make it right.

  1. Be Loyal

Stand up for those you lead and do not speak poorly about anyone under your leadership to anyone else you lead. This also goes for personal information that is shared with you in confidence. Keep the bonds of trust strong.

  1. Obtain Results

To lead you need to produce results. Set the pieces and move them towards a target & achieve it. Always keep the length and budget under control and deliver on what you say. Never make excuse for falling short on your set target.

  1. Continuous Learning

Leaders are always learning and never resting on their abilities. Feedback is an essential way to learn effectively and always accept the feedback with a gracious attitude. The future always holds uncertainty and the best leader prepares their skills for tomorrow.  

  1. Clear Requirements

It is not known unless you state is clearly and concisely. Do not assume it is understood implicitly even if it seems obvious. Confirm understanding and do not change from your initial outset unless you re-consult from anew.

  1. Fully Accountable

The results are a leader’s responsibility. Hold the parties accountable for both the good and bad of the results. If things go poorly the leader takes the blame and shields those he leads.

  1. Assess The Facts

Even if the discussion is cold & hard, it needs to be had. Take on matters with direct action and lead people with courage through muddy waters. Do not avoid the real issue once you find it.

  1. Keep Promises

Your words are your honor. It is symbolic of how you lead, and you must keep your word at all cost. Always get done what you say you will do. Do not break a promise or make an excuse as you why you chose to break it.

  1. Listen

You will never have all the answers, insight or knowledge. You rely on those you lead to make up where you cannot. But you cannot learn from others if you do not listen to them. Let people ask questions and speak.

  1. Measured Trust

Trust those who have earned it and assess the risk of leaving that task in another’s hands. Lean into trust but know when to withhold it if the person is not ready for the burden of a task.  Do not trust everyone but create a network of people you can trust.
